My cousin and I have always kept enlistment in the back pocket of ideas while we think about out futures and careers. Last week at a wedding, I was introduced to a man who had been serving in the ANG for 20 years. He'd jumped around, but was currently serving as something similar to Air Traffic Controller.
We talked about careers for almost half an hour. The options sounded genuinely interesting. Everything from one weekend a month - two weeks a year, to full time enlistment with deployment. There are also positions where you work as a civilian on-base as a full time job, and work the one weekend a month two weeks a year Guard routine. Great for my cousin, since he's going to go through trade school.
I haven't talked with him seriously about it yet. I mentioned it in passing a few days ago. I plan on talking to him about it this weekend at his graduation party.
This is the first military service path I've ever seriously considered. The flexibility and benefits are really appealing compared to the Marines or the Coast Guard.
